Whole Genome Amplification

There are many reasons why DNA may be limited, for example;

  • The original quality or quantity of starting material may have been poor or the collection processes were not ideal

  • It’s possible that no DNA studies were planned at the time of tissue/blood collection, therefore only small amounts of blood were collected from each patient or only non-invasive isolation procedures were used at the time of collection (eg, heel pricks)

  • Only small samples such as cancer biopsies and needle aspirates are available

  • Samples may be degraded due to clotted samples, poor blood draw or simply a broken tube or a freezer breakdown

  • Samples from clinical, adverse drug reaction studies or tissue bank collections have been depleted

  • Only serum samples are available. Extraction of sufficient good-quality DNA from serum is difficult
